#03 ROADMAP TO HEALTH...Irritable Bowel Syndrome

At the age of 35 life got a bit crazy.  Shortly after the birth of my son, my brother passed unexpectedly from heart failure. With 2 young children at home (my daughter not quite 3), working full-time, my husband away from home working for long periods of time and doing my best to care for my parents whom were obviously devastated by their loss…something had to give and that was my health.

After many tests by the medical industry, I was diagnosed with “Irritable bowel syndrome” (IBS) which greatly upset me because I felt that was a phrase used in place of, “we really do not know”.  Just my opinion!

The best I could do at that time was adopt a new health regiment. Daily workouts in my basement started my day @ 5:30am.  My career as an IT System Manager was demanding, to say the least.  My children were demanding, they were at that age.  I felt like a single Mom, in a marriage with determination to move mountains for my health.  All meals were healthy, meat, vegetables and fruit.  Although I lost weight and gained energy it did nothing for the IBS.  It was something I began to accept and live with.

Fast forward into my 40’s and my sister introduced me to Miracle Mineral Supplement (MMS).  The instructions today are much more sophisticated than they were 25 years ago.  This supplement made me very ill on some days, but I persevered because I was determined.  Although I eventually gave this up, I now believe it was very successful in improving my health, clearing 40 years worth of parasites from my system.

Heading into my 50’s and still suffering from IBS.  Somehow I found something called Jilly’s Juice and moved forward learning and making this product in my kitchen.  Again, had the potential to me very ill on some days, but that is the natural way of medicine.  I was not up for taking pharma pills, with many side effects, in an attempt to heal.  My goal was to fix the issue, not band-aid the issue.  The natural way is not for everyone, but it was for me.  After some time, I again walked away from this method even though it was beneficial in improving my health, and the IBS.  It is a difficult protocol to remain on indefinitely.

Fast forward into my early 60’s, I still have IBS for over 20 years now and for some reason it is getting worse.  My body is gaining weight even though I am eating healthier and staying active.  My skin is gaining itchy rashes and I am back to researching.  My daughter hands me a book she found at a garage sale…. Wheat Belly.  This struck a cord in me and decided to cut all wheat out of my daily eating habits.  Easier said than done.  The results were tremendous, the rashes clearing, the IBS disappearing, and my energy levels rising.  Again, this is hard act to follow because most food has some form of wheat.  It took me years to master this way of eating.  I miss bread/toast and tried the almond bread thing but I am not baker.

At this point in my life I have learned to listen and pay attention to my body’s reactions to food.  One of my favourite foods is potatoes…mashed, fried, baked, or boiled into potatoe salad.  It was one of the hardest of foods to give up, but I finally found a very close runner up for French fries…. Rutabaga!

So here I am with a total new way eating at the age of 65.  Unlimited meat (chicken and beef only), eggs, vegetables, and baking from the Wheat Belly cookbook.  It is important to say sugar is a big no-no, it too is toxic and addictive.  Furthermore, all meat and eggs are purchased from farms that are organic and grass fed.  Any deviation from this new way of living alerts me within 6 hours of intaking the food which brings on the symptoms for 12 to 24 hours.

Even with all these changes over the years, I still have minor health issues but that is for another post,  stay tuned...
